Ryan’s Shortlist of Apple Software Pt. 1

For some reason a few of my associates and friends have gone Apple in the last few weeks. Life isn’t all 3-way iChats though, so I threw together a shortlist of stuff I use, and suggest you take a gander at:

iChat. Hurray, this is already on your computer. You should probably set it up. If you don’t already have an AIM name or Google talk, get one. I suggest setting up an AIM account since it seems to play a little nicer.

Mail is fairly decent. Why don’t you use it too. It will help centralize your POP and many html based email services. Check with your provider for server settings.

MailPlane, this is new and in beta. Basically it ties your gmail account (which everyone should have by now) into all the neat iLife and OSx operations that Mail usually takes. Since I live on google’s mail and docs, I gave this a try. Currently in beta, it ran stable on my iMac. I know some of the new iLife suites (’08) don’t recognize, but I am sure an update is forth coming. If anyone is interested I bet I can wrassle up an invite.

Transmission, a Bit Torrent Client. Don’t know what bit torrent is? Learn here. The gist is that this a peer-to-peer file sharing protocol.

Television Episode Downloader (TED). This will scan the many tubes of the internet for bit torrents (remember those?) of the shows you want, then initiate the download of them. Like on demand, but requiring more patience.

Coda. This is what I do all my web development stuff in, for now. I say that because my trial is nearly over and I am feeling there are better uses for my cash right. However, there are no better uses for you cash…so please, buy it for me. Just send me the serial number for registration. Thanks.

iCal. This is the built in calendar of OSx, pretty solid.

Address Book. Again, built in and nicely intregrated into other apps. You can import any contacts you may already have if desired. This does some great automation for tasks that you may want to do later (hello mail merged christmas letter!). You can start off by adding my vCard.

Firefox for those times when some wacky web app doesn’t like Safari.
