Brilliant Professors Suggests Some Kind of Electronic Text Book

Here is a great example of the state run non-profit schools catching up to the for-profit University of Phoenix model.
Genius!<---more!>

Statesman.com

“College texts routinely cost $120 and can soar to nearly $200 for specialty courses. Texts have tripled in cost over the past 20 years, driving the average expense to students to nearly $900 per year.”

and further on they they say: "Granof's idea is to have colleges pay a licensing fee to the publisher based on the number of students in a particular class, much like software is licensed."

I would be curious how the publishers work with them on this.

UOP currently charges a flat rate (about $80, depending on program) for access to the text online. They mix in some addition reading links, simulations, and personal progress checks too.

Ruby Requirements Restrict (my access)

They got right back to me about the suggested prerequisites for the program.

Exploring Education Endeavors

I have an Undergraduate in Business Management from the University of Phoenix*. Learned a lot from the program, developed some great skills, and even made some friends.

Here’s the kicker, I mostly have a degree. Sitting 9.37 credits (something lime 3 1/3 classes) from completion is embarrassing, and I need to remedy that pronto. There are a few options of how to do this.

Shouldn’t be that hard or costly to wrap this up.

What next then?

  • MBA (most likely at University of Phoenix, I like the program there)
  • Ruby on Rails Cert course at UW extension campus
  • Stay home, have a beer

Time will tell I suppose.
Disclaimer: I work for the University of Phoenix. Decided to attend almost four years ago, got a job there to cover the cost. Got promoted a few times, finished the degree, stuck around. Now I help other folks go to school. Any comments I make in regard to the University of Phoenix are my own, and in no way sanctioned by the University.
