House. Looks promising, could be moving next week. Worse case scenario, we are one step closer (homelessness) to my dream of Yurt living.

Currently, I have mastered the G and E cords on the GeTar. I can’ t switch between them, but in my world of cutting edge tunes it is not required.

My plan of getting my niece to accept the nickname John C. Riley as her own only to have me reveal to her who J.C. Riley is on her 18th birthday is moving along nicely. Nicely indeed.

Kate made a fort out of boxes. Not really. I did, it is boss.

Removing this from my list of things to create since someone beat me to it. Snooze ya looze.

People often stop me, asking “Ryan, what are you into right now?” Here are some things from the last week or so.

Reading System of World by Neal Stephensen. Crickets, this is good. Of course, one should read the other books in the series first.

Reading Philippians

Learning about the Speed of Gravity. Which I had never considered until this week when I was in the shower. Been fun, starting from Newton and going through to present day drama.

Less is More, continuing the process of getting rid of stuff. This week ditched my beloved giant recliner (given to my Cousin). Next on the chopping block 20 pounds of books, another chair and clothes that were totally fly 10 years ago.

Added another old family video, Trampo-o-fun

Updated the Church Podcast

Valentines Day. Kate got me candy (Specifically, Violet Crumble) and I got her something from our favorite art gallery, Blue Bottle here in Capitol Hill.

Seriously considering doing the Tough Guy Challenge. Basically a race, but you have to run through a fiery field, cross a freezing pond, etc. No sweat, I may be slow but I am pretty much indestructible.

Sidenote: Have you seen Boston.com’s Big Picture? Great Photographics Journalism

Facebook is dead to me. Again.

Well, besides picking up my beloved Bible Bit by Bit…I am considering a new venue. Something that really reflects how interesting and great I am!

I am looking a doing a travel narative ‘cast for a bit. The few technical hurdles (mainly me remembering what I did with my mic cable after I moved) will be overcome shortly.

So, having said this…anyone want to be a guest?

Back in the day (Last Monday) I wrote about pursuing a Ruby Certificate at the UW extension campus.

They got right back to me about the suggested prerequisites for the program.

Below are the admission requirements for the Ruby Programming certificate program.

Familiarity with Object-oriented concepts

At least one course in another programming language

Completion of at least 2 years of College education

One year of programming experience preferred

Individuals who have successfully completed the UW certificate in C Programming, C++ Programming, Perl Programming or Visual Basic Programming are automatically accepted. See below for details of the application process.

Apparently my degree specializing in TPS report development and tracking doesn’t get me too far in this arena. Sounds like I need to hit the books and knock out some object oriented study.

I have an Undergraduate in Business Management from the University of Phoenix*. Learned a lot from the program, developed some great skills, and even made some friends.

Here’s the kicker, I mostly have a degree. Sitting 9.37 credits (something lime 3 1/3 classes) from completion is embarrassing, and I need to remedy that pronto. There are a few options of how to do this.

Clep (online tests that get college credits)

Take some elective courses at UOP

Take electives at community college, most likely Seattle Central Community College

Shouldn’t be that hard or costly to wrap this up.

What next then?

MBA (most likely at University of Phoenix, I like the program there)

Ruby on Rails Cert course at UW extension campus

Stay home, have a beer

Time will tell I suppose.
Disclaimer: I work for the University of Phoenix. Decided to attend almost four years ago, got a job there to cover the cost. Got promoted a few times, finished the degree, stuck around. Now I help other folks go to school. Any comments I make in regard to the University of Phoenix are my own, and in no way sanctioned by the University.

Really there are no shortages of ways, although I suspect there is one right answer. I will leave that to the philosophers.

So, what have I been doing?

Well, I have been posting at D.U.T.C.H and recording podcasts all over again!

Check out undirected brilliance at odeo and the bible at iTunes (search for Ryan Hoffman).

I will put The Bible on odeo when I have time to convert some files over.

This is a strange strange song I made up one very blustery morning when I totally awesome and not mentally deficient dog made a break for the border.

I think one I will have to face the reality of missing a job opportunity because they googled me and found me explaing the concept of the hole or something.

I have a wedding right around the corner and I can’t wait for it. Actually, I can wait…but only because my “timemachine” (actually just the trusty Saturn driven in reverse past a watch store while I hum “Love a Battle Field:) doesn’t exactly work.

In the meantime, I have a lot on my mind.

Here, in no particular order, are some of them:

God and stuff

Kate

Legal ways to become one of the 25 most influential men in Seattle

Illegal ways to achieve the same

Starting a fight club

The role of a decentralized Potlach based economy in the future

Vacations

No details, but today has been totally awesome! I got to have an Apicoectomy!

In the aftermath I am all hopped up on whatever random pills seem to find their way into my mouth every few hours. Ok, not really, I am on a strict regime of penicillin, hurtgo’sawaymagicpills, and steroids! Totally Boss.

I am tripping. And by tripping, I mean that both literally and figurtively.
Yes, I fall…no sweat…more pain pills for that.

Also, I am having these intense and very entertaining conversations with the bust Chopin.

One key point we debated today was:

“When do songs become oldies? And at what point can we nostagalistically refer to the writers geniuses even if they weren’t very good?”

Chopin, having experienced his fair share of music history went on and on and on about this. Who pulled his string?

Anyways, we agreed that if 15 years pass, and the artist lays low…they get an honorary “Sucked…but come on, that was 15 years ago!” status.

I was thinking about these people who are the hook now, how great it would be to be absolved of sucking. I could make up a card and tell them how much I appreciate them for throwing their hat in the ring, no hard feelings, and how I thought that the record labels probally twisted their music around anyways.

So I set out to research my first person. I have images of using Stryper…but they made a come back. I crossed them off and put a reminder in 12 years to check back.

Next I did Kris Kros. Those lovable little scamps, with backwards pants and cartoon logos! They were so young, they were twisted by the insidious record label, their creative ported towards dastardly ends. I figured they could use some love.

So, I turn the interweb to find them.

OH SWEET LORD NO!

<img src="http://www.sonymusic.com/artists/KrisKross/art/kkhmpg.gif" width=240">

What happened!?!

This isn’t good, this isn’t good at all.

Having freaked, I haven’t heard their music in the last 12 years so I really can’t say.

But looking at the site Sony has for them they aren’t that high on the totem pole for webdevelopment.
Update:

Maybe I was too harsh?

You can listen to a track here. Not that bad, formulaic and a little by the numbers. But it does have some flow to it.

Still no card for them.

In April 2000 a conference was hosted by Stanford University to discuss the question of wether or not we the People can be replaced by spiritual robots. There were many very intelegent and capable thinkers in attendance (my invite must have been lost in the mail).

My particular favorite response was by Kevin Kelly (kk.org).

His stand basically boiled down to “Nope..or mayby” based on timeline (we would only have lasted about 400 generations), defining what “Humanity” was, the limited occurance out right replacement (for example I have a new love in Katrin…but I still love technology), whether robots will replace us or simply be Humanity 2.0 (children of ours), what the hell does “Spiritual” mean anyways, and finally do we want it to happen.

Good points really, but of course Kevin Kelly is known as a thinker.

A hinge point for me is the motivation factor. Why would we develop Spiritual Robots? In economics they say Money goes where the interest is, and I am of the thought Spiritual Robots will be pricey.

I don’t see Robots trampling around, getting Spiritual on us within 100 years (my great great grandchildren’s time). But then again my own Great Grandma Armela didn’t predict what my days would look like and could not possibly know the shape the 98 years of her life would follow.

Also, to what purpose would Spiritual Robots serve God. How would they fit in his plans? I have no idea, I have detached my level of planning for God’s longtime ago.

Bah, I just don’t know.
